Big Brum Theatre in Education has been working in Birmingham and the West Midlands since 1982. Using a team of permanent and freelance actors and teachers, they produce work with theatre at its heart involving high levels of participation by pupils. Their work includes:
- Participatory Theatre in Education Programmes
- Big Brum Youth Theatre for 9-13 year olds
- Theatre Ark – a network of young people across Birmingham providing access to a range of drama-related activities
Big Brum's upcoming programme is called ‘Stitch Up,’ based on an original play by Chris Cooper. Combining world-class theatre for young people with participatory workshop activities, ‘Stitch Up’ creates opportunities for reflection, problem solving and creative thinking, cultivating innovative approaches to teaching and learning in the classroom. The visit Over the course of the afternoon, participants will be offered an explanation and practical demonstration of the company’s work as they rehearse their new programme, ‘Stitch Up’ at rehearsals taking place in Pegasus Primary School, Castle Vale. In more detail, the session may cover:
- A brief history of Big Brum
- Some of the theories which underpin the work
- The different contexts in which Big Brum work
- Some of the methods they use to engage young people
In addition, participants will be offered an opportunity to ask more specific questions pertaining to their own studies, interest or area of research.
