24/1/11, Nottingham.
A few angry people.
After spending a week in Nottingham our encounters with weird and wonderful people continued. It’s interesting to hear peoples concerns and issues that relate to home living, environments, pursuing your passions, doing things for yourself and the state of society. Firstly we met the angry father and here are a few things we discussed: the lack of fathers’ rights, human rights, getting out when you can, systems in place not serving the public, health, crime, police not doing their jobs, taking action into our own hands and the cruel divorce system.
We then met the community centre manager who spoke about community centres being run by business people paying themselves large wages and not doing a good job that serves the community. He also talked about public spaces such as bowling greens and how the new generation of pensioners are not interested in this which led to the discussion of what needs to be done with these spaces or in fact is anything going to be done.
Next we came across the BBQ man where discussions about community spaces, bars and the art if conversation came up. We then talked about creating spaces and places to facilitate and discuss issues and solutions to problems. He wanted to work in a place which promoted harmony.
On the street we met the magician, who stopped and talked to us for a while discussing the importance of pushing our unique talents and selling our skills to Art galleries by staging it as an installation piece. He mentioned contemporary Art and how we should become illusionists and alter people’s minds.
Finally we spoke to the social worker student who enlightened us on social policies, cultures and sub cultures such as bikers and ‘Eco’s’ and their exclusion from society. She also mentioned disability and lack of spaces with proper access, mental health issues in the local area, the drug problem and coping with living in an un-caring society. She stressed the importance of sourcing the information ourselves and taking more leadership.
We have discovered many things from these encounters such as great minds think alike, creative minds create collective consciousness and that people want to change but some do not know how or where to begin. The media are playing with minds, depressing, un-motivating, distracting and pulling people in. These big influences are dangerous. We must push for change and alter our own futures.
Some people are butterflies; they flutter in and flutter out. Others however are like bees, they are the doers, the makers, the ones that will make things happen and alter things. We need more bees…
